Studio Oxeye writing on paper

We are a woman-owned, full service architecture firm based in Sacramento, California. Our process is artful, collaborative, and forward-thinking.

We believe that architecture is the framework for stories of the everyday. Architecture should enhance our experience through design that is mindful of context, environment, and community.

A story behind the name

Studio Oxeye embodies a simultaneous love of history and contemporary, encouraging an open-minded and thoughtful outlook on the world.

The term ox-eye defines a small circular or oval window that is a feature of Neoclassical architecture. An ox-eye is a window offering a somewhat whimsical perspective on the outside world. This type of window makes a powerful architectural statement in a relatively small space and has the power to enrich even the most utilitarian area.

Furthermore, the ox itself is a symbol of abundance and manifesting goals.

Gen has taught architecture studios at Sac State, UC Berkeley, and UVA. She grew up in a military family (Go Navy!) traveling the country and the world, which has instilled in her an endless curiosity and love of travel. Gen lives with her general contractor husband, their son, a german shepherd and an alley cat in a 100-year-old bungalow (that is a perpetual remodel) in Oak Park, Sacramento.

Process-Driven

Our process values the role of the hand in creative design and architecture. From the initial stages of the project, concept and design, to the end result, our process is thoughtful, holistic, and doesn’t cut corners.

We are a full-service architecture studio that specializes in both the design (creative) and technical (coordination + construction) stages of a project.

How we work

Our experience ranges in scale and includes small fabrication projects, contemporary custom homes, mixed use apartment buildings, K-12 school projects, and large-scale developer-driven master plans. We prefer to work on projects that allow us to be hands-on, to collaborate with builders and others in the industry, and to work one on one with a client.

Every project has a personality of its own. A specific site, unique challenges and characters involved come together to write a story and to form lasting relationships… which is exactly why we love our jobs!

Great design is a team effort from beginning to end: the process starts with understanding our clients goals and desires, and through collaboration we create well thought-out and authentic ideas that are beautiful and functional.
